Inner Child Dialogue
A Conversation With Your Younger Self
Your inner child represents the younger parts of you that may still carry emotions, needs, fears, beliefs, and experiences from childhood. This exercise invites you to create a compassionate conversation between who you are today and the younger version of yourself, giving them the opportunity to express what they may not have been able to say or receive at the time.
Meet Your Younger Self
Close your eyes for a moment and imagine yourself as a child. You may picture yourself at a particular age or simply allow an image or memory to arise naturally.
Notice your younger self without trying to change anything. What do they look like? How do they seem to feel? What do you sense they might need from you?
When you're ready, open your journal and begin a conversation.
Write:
Present Me: Hi. I'm here with you. How are you feeling?
Then allow your younger self to respond:
Younger Me: ...
Continue moving back and forth between the two voices. Try not to decide in advance what your younger self should say. Simply write what comes to mind.
You can gently ask:
- How are you feeling?
- What are you afraid of?
- Is there something you wish someone had understood?
- What did you need that you didn't receive?
- Is there something you've been holding onto?
- What do you wish you could have said?
- What do you need from me now?
- What would help you feel safe, loved, heard, or accepted?
- Is there something you want me to remember?
- What would you like us to do more of together?
As your present-day self, respond with compassion rather than judgment. Listen, reassure, validate, and offer your younger self what you are able to give them today.
You might say:
Present Me: I hear you.
Present Me: It makes sense that you felt that way.
Present Me: You don't have to hide that part of yourself from me.
Present Me: I'm here now, and I will listen to you.
Present Me: What happened wasn't yours to fix.
Present Me: You deserve to feel loved and accepted exactly as you are.
Before You Finish
Ask your younger self one final question:
Present Me: What do you need from me moving forward?
Allow them to answer, then finish by writing:
One way I can give my younger self what they need today is...
