Fear vs. Intuition
Learning to Recognize the Difference
Fear and intuition can sometimes feel similar because both may arise when we are facing uncertainty, change, or an important decision. This exercise invites you to separate the two voices on paper so you can begin noticing how each one communicates with you. Rather than trying to immediately decide which voice is “right,” simply become curious about what each one is saying.
Choose a Situation
Think of a decision, relationship, opportunity, or situation where you feel uncertain about what to do.
Write at the top of your page:
The situation I am seeking clarity about is...
Then divide your page into two sections: Fear and Intuition.
Let Fear Speak
Allow the fearful part of you to say everything it wants to say without judging or suppressing it.
Begin with:
Fear says...
Then explore:
- What am I afraid will happen?
- What am I trying to protect myself from?
- What is the worst-case scenario I'm imagining?
- What past experience might be influencing this fear?
- Am I afraid of rejection, failure, loss, judgment, or uncertainty?
- What does fear want me to do—or avoid doing?
- What would make fear feel safer?
Let Your Intuition Speak
Now become quiet for a moment. Take a few slow breaths and allow yourself to move beneath the mental noise. Then write:
My intuition says...
Explore:
- What do I sense beneath all the overthinking?
- What feels true even if I can't completely explain why?
- What does my body seem to be communicating?
- What choice feels most aligned with who I am?
- What would I choose if I trusted myself?
- What am I being guided toward—or away from?
- What truth might I already know but be afraid to acknowledge?
Compare the Two Voices
Read both sections without immediately choosing between them. Notice their differences.
Ask yourself:
Which voice feels urgent, repetitive, or focused on what could go wrong?
Which voice feels quieter, clearer, or more grounded?
Is either voice being influenced by an old wound, belief, desire, or expectation?
What practical facts do I still need before making a decision?
What becomes clearer when I stop trying to force an answer?
Then complete:
Fear wants to protect me from...
My intuition may be guiding me toward...
What I know for certain right now is...
The next step that feels most aligned is...
