Future Self Journaling
Connect With the Person You Are Becoming
Your future self is not a completely different person—they are you, shaped by the choices, healing, growth, and experiences that are still unfolding. This exercise invites you to step beyond your current circumstances and connect with the version of yourself who has already moved through what you are navigating today. Instead of asking only, “What should I do?” allow yourself to imagine what the wiser, more experienced version of you might want you to know.
Meet Your Future Self
Choose a point in the future that feels meaningful to you—it might be one year, three years, five years, or even ten years from now. Close your eyes for a moment and imagine yourself there.
Don't focus only on what you have accomplished. Notice who you have become.
How do you feel when you wake up in the morning?
What feels different about the way you think and speak to yourself?
What have you healed, released, or stopped carrying?
What do you value now?
How do you spend your time and energy?
What boundaries have you learned to honor?
What do you no longer worry about?
What are you grateful your present-day self had the courage to do?
Now open your journal and write from the perspective of this future version of you.
A Letter From Your Future Self
Begin with:
Dear Present Me,
Then allow your future self to speak freely. Write without holding back or trying to create the “right” answers. You might explore:
- I want you to know...
- Something you're worried about right now that you don't need to be is...
- One thing I wish you would stop being so hard on yourself about is...
- What you're experiencing right now is teaching you...
- Something you need to let go of is...
- Something you need to trust more deeply is...
- The choice I'm grateful you made is...
- The risk I'm grateful you took is...
- Please stop waiting for...
- Keep saying yes to...
- Start saying no to...
- What matters far less than you think right now is...
- What matters more than you realize is...
- If I could give you one piece of guidance, it would be...
Finish your letter with:
“The person you are becoming needs you to…”
Complete the sentence without overthinking it.
Bring the Future Into the Present
Read your letter and notice what stands out. Then ask yourself:
What does my future self understand that I am still learning?
What am I being asked to trust, release, begin, or change?
What is one choice I can make today that brings me closer to the person I am becoming?
Write down one small action you can take now. Your future self isn't created someday in the future. That version of you is shaped through the choices you make today.
Truth to Remember
You don't have to become your future self all at once. Every conscious choice you make today is helping create the person you are becoming.
